Four BDÜ webinars on terminology management by Prof. Dr. Rachel Herwartz in spring 2024

In March and April of this year, Prof. Dr. Rachel Herwartz will be holding four exciting webinars on the subject of terminology management on behalf of BDÜ Weiterbildungs- und Fachverlagsgesellschaft.

On March 19, 2024 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., the focus will be on “Terminology circles – designing coordination processes company-wide”.

This highlights the importance of a systematic terminology coordination process within the terminology group for the long-term success of a project.

On April 16, 2024 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., the webinar “Terminology extraction – knowing how!” will highlight the importance of terminology work for terminologists, editors and translators and present various extraction methods and extraction tools.

It deals with how to quickly build up and expand an initial stock of terminology. A distinction is initially made between manual, semi-automatic and automatic terminology extraction methods.

In the webinar, Prof. Dr. Herwartz will present various commercial and open source extraction tools, explain the advantages and disadvantages of using them, and discuss which extracted information is really important and should be included in the database.

Furthermore, various data categories of a terminology database are examined, as well as the crucial phase of terminology research, which forms the basis for successful terminology extraction.

Finally, the webinar “Terminology and artificial intelligence in the text creation and translation process” will take place on April 23, 2024 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., which is dedicated to the entry of AI, especially through systems such as ChatGPT, into everyday life and work.

It is pointed out that translators are already familiar with AI, especially through the post-editing of machine-generated texts, and that terminology is often neglected in these systems, which creates new demands and perspectives for the translation profession.

The webinar provides insights into how neural machine translation systems such as GPTs and large language models work.

It shows how these systems can influence terminology in automatic text creation and translation.
